The School

Magdalen College School, Oxford, founded by William Waynflete in 1480 is one of the country’s leading independent schools.  Each year we employ a small number of graduates, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, in a part-time capacity, to provide up-to-date, scholarly and expert knowledge as part of our Waynflete Studies programme. Recent appointees have found the role fits well alongside their current research commitments.

The Role

We are looking to appoint a Waynflete Academic in English to commence as soon as possible and to continue throughout the 2024-2025 academic year. The responsibilities of the Waynflete Academic in English will be shaped in accordance with departmental needs to fit the strengths of the candidate appointed. Responsibilities are likely to include:

  • Offering academic enrichment activities for the most able pupils, particularly but not exclusively in the Sixth Form
  • Arranging a programme of talks by visiting speakers, students and colleagues for the Sixth Form English Society
  • Preparing L6th candidates for university application
  • Assisting members of the department in researching and resourcing texts

There is lots of scope for the candidate to develop their own initiatives: recent Waynflete Academics have run creative writing workshops and medieval and postcolonial reading groups, for example. A willingness to contribute to the School’s extensive partnerships programme is desirable, as is a willingness to take on extra paid hours to assist with internal exam marking at certain points in the year.

Remuneration and Benefits

The role is likely to be the equivalent of half a day per week which is 0.15 of a Full Time Equivalent. The salary for this position will likely to be £3,638 per annum (£24,255 FTE).

The school has a fully equipped gym which is available for staff use, and staff may also enjoy access to the University of Oxford’s Rosenblatt Swimming Pool. Tennis courts are available, and there is a comprehensive programme of staff sports clubs, including football, climbing, yoga, Pilates, and badminton. Staff also have the opportunity to join various interest groups. There is a wide range of benefits on offer to staff, including a free lunch during term time and complimentary use of school sports facilities.

Staff are encouraged to make use of the Senior Common Room within and after the school day, as an area for relaxation and shared discussion outside departments. There is also a quiet room located close to the SCR where staff can work and study. Tea and Coffee are served in the SCR at morning break, Lunch is provided in the Dining Hall, and cakes and cut fruit are available in the SCR at the end of the school day.
