On Tuesday 18 June, MCS was delighted to welcome members of the Gary Kirsten Foundation to School field for a special cricket match against our U13A team.
Gary Kirsten is a South African cricketing legend, perhaps best remembered for scoring 188 against the UAE in the 1996 ICC World Cup, an innings that remains the third-highest score of any ODI batsman in the competition. A veteran of 101 test matches and 185 ODIs, Kirsten watched on from the boundary as his Foundation side played out an exhilarating draw with the MCS XI.
The Foundation aims to bring cricketing infrastructure to South African townships that would otherwise be unable to have it, while also providing coaching for young players. Thus far, it has supplied five schools from Khayelitsha, a township in Cape Town, with nets, kit bags and other equipment.
Gary spoke very highly of the school after the match: “Magdalen College School’s hospitality was exceptional and we are so grateful to the staff and boys for welcoming the team … Playing amongst the spires of Oxford is a unique experience for anyone, let alone these young boys from Cape Town.”

The touring group have since journeyed to Wales to comfortably beat a team from St Fagan’s, before being given the opportunity to watch their home country play against Afghanistan and New Zealand in the ongoing ICC World Cup – during the latter fixture, played at Edgbaston in Birmingham, the children received a shout-out from the Sky Sports commentary team.
We wish them the best of luck with the remainder of their tour.
