The Grand Final of the MCS Poetry Recitation Competition took place today in Big School, with pupils from both the Junior and Senior Schools taking part.

Finalists from every Senior School year group, from the Second Form through to the Upper Sixth, performed in front of their peers and staff in chapel. Following on from their success in the Junior School Poetry Competition, two Junior School pupils also took part: Aryan (J2), who read an original poem ‘The Aryan Rap‘, and Atharv (J4), who performed Dinner Hall by Michael Rosen.

The Senior School finalists were:

Second Form: Ben – On His Blindness by John Milton

Third Form: Samuel – an adaptation of Talking Turkeys by Benjamin Zephaniah

Lower Fourth: Shen – an autobiographical adaptation of Where Are You From? by Riz Ahmed

Upper Fourth: Cyrus – Cozy Apologia by Rita Dove

Fifth Form: George – Canto 4 from Dante’s Inferno, translated by Clare Louise Harmon

Lower Sixth : Natasha – August by Dorothy Parker

Upper Sixth: Clement – Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll

After the competition, the winner was judged by members of the Common Room, who deliberated throughout the morning before the decision was announced in the final assembly this afternoon.

The results are as follows (in reverse order):

  • Joint 3rd: Cyrus (Upper Fourth), George (Fifth Form), Clement (Upper Sixth)
  • 2nd: Aryan (Junior School)
  • 1st: Shen (Lower Fourth)

Many congratulations to all the pupils involved on their bold, dynamic and captivating performances.
