OW Ed Kirwan (2010) has launched a campaign aimed at raising awareness for the homeless.

The project, which is named ‘Motivation of the Invisible’, intends to give a voice to individuals who are sleeping rough, allowing them to portray their lives and their ambitions to an ever-increasing audience.

Ed states that the campaign’s purpose is as follows:

‘Those who are homeless have nothing. They are invisible in our current society.

‘Motivation of the invisible’ aims to combat people’s flawed societal upbringing through influential photos, videos, interviews and towards the end, public talks and screenings of a documentary.

Motivation drives us all, even if it is in our subconscious. In a world where we often complain about trivial things, my project will remind the general public that even those who have nothing still have motivation, drive and dreams – all of which should be heard’.

Ed further elucidates the greatest message that this project seeks to expound:

‘From talking to many, many people the big message that has come out of this project is the importance of acknowledgement – to some it means more than money, more than food. The ability to be recognised as human is slipping away from many on the street as compassion fatigue sets in for those around them.

My project is giving rough sleepers and volunteers a voice and making the public realise that even if they give nothing, they can still acknowledge – yet this means overriding the conditioning we have received since we were young that it is the norm to ignore, better for our own guilt to avoid those on the street’.
