OW Charlie Shan (2018) has been appointed the new Musical Director of acclaimed Oxford a capella group ‘Out of the Blue’.
Charlie has only just started at Oxford University, and is the first fresher to ever have held the role, having auditioned while still at MCS last year.
He told the Waynflete Office: ‘I applied for the job after my friend semi-jokingly tagged me in a Facebook post last Easter saying they were looking for a Musical Director, knowing I’d written a couple a capella arrangements during my time at MCS.
‘For my audition, I had to compose a 6 part arrangement during my first week of exams and rehearse it with them – following a fairly nerve-wracking audition, I got the call later that evening that I’d been chosen for the job.
‘I spent a week in Edinburgh living with this year’s crew during their fringe set, and it was as incredible as I’d imagined. I’ve certainly got a lot of work to do to get as polished they are now but I’ll give it my best shot.’
The group has won more a capella championships than any other in Britain, and has also reached the semifinals of Britain’s Got Talent and scored 16 million YouTube views in recent years.
They are planning UK and US tours, as well as producing a full studio album this year – and Charlie has lots of his own ideas for the group.
‘I’ve been writing lots of arrangements over the summer. We’ve got a really solid group of boys this year, and I’m looking to add my own spice to the group this year, branching out into genres that have been relatively untouched so far by OOTB – dipping into some emo, punk, and who knows what else!’
