OW Alex Grantham (2015) was rushed onto the pitch in the latter stages of Oxford City’s clash with St Alban’s, but not in the position that he’s used to.
City were 2-1 up in the final ten minutes of their Vanarama National League South tie when Rob Sinclair was struck by a hamstring injury. With both allotted outfield substitutions already made, reserve goalkeeper Grantham came on as a makeshift striker. An out-of-position debut, but one that Grantham tackled spiritedly, applying pressure from the front as Oxford City aimed to consolidate and see out their lead.
The official match report continues: ‘It wouldn’t be entirely inaccurate to state that Grantham had a small hand in what should have been the most decisive moment of the match with just three minutes of normal time remaining. His decoy run through the middle granted Fassanmade the freedom to burst down the right channel and draw a decisive foul from Herd, leaving the referee with no choice but to award a penalty. Paterson stepped up and struck confidently, but Snedker was more than equal to his effort – not only pushing the ball onto the post but gathering safely before anybody could get to the loose ball.’
Despite this late drama, Oxford City retained their goal advantage, and went home with all three points safely bagged.
