OW Yannis Philippakis (2004), member of Foals (Oxford based Indie Rock band), won a Brit Award for Best British Group at the 2020 Brit Awards.

Philippakis’ acceptance speech:

“Thank you so much to the Brits for voting for us to win. It means so much. We’d like to thank our label who have just stuck by us all the way through and given us total artistic freedom- you guys have just trusted us every step of the way and have allowed us to do exactly what we want to do. That’s the way it should be, and we appreciate that so much. Thank you to our manager Peter Mench, and all of QPrime for being with us since the days when we were touring round the country in a little Royal Mail van that my dad lent the money for. Thanks so much to everybody who loves our music and believes in us and comes to the shows – all the fans. Thanks so much- honestly it means so much to win this after however many years we’ve been doing it, and hopefully next year we’ll see some more women in this category.”

Philippakis left MCS in 2004, and went on to study at St John’s, Oxford, before joining Foals alongside Abingdon School alumni Walter Gervers and Jimmy Smith.
