Dear all,

In contemplation of the year that has been 2020, we share below a short video about life at MCS as a year-end finale – and later some festive cheer from the Music Department.

It has been a joy to keep our community connected in this most challenging of years.

We hope you enjoy the Christmas selection box of items below, and that you have a restful holiday season. May we all look forward to the opportunities that 2021 must surely bring.

Video: Reflecting on 2020- A View of MCS

The Master, Helen Pike, and Director of Alumni Relations, Alan Cooper, present this account of MCS in 2020.

While discussing how the school continues to flourish and succeed despite hardship, it also contains some evocative views of MCS buildings and grounds that we know our community have missed in recent months. Against the backdrop of 2020’s events, it is reassuring to see the continuity and permanence of these sights.

Conveniamus means ‘let us come together – if only we could meet and convene’ and that sense of regret, but also reinforcing what a strong community this is.’

Enjoy this moving video here.

 Sustainability and Diversity
Our progress on our Diversity and Sustainability commitments can be seen here.

This half term, over 600 pupils from J4-U6th completed a survey on racial attitudes and awareness. While MCS emerged as both a strongly diverse and inclusive community, there were some areas of improvement on which we can now focus.

Posters are being produced which detail what our policies advise all pupils should do if they perceive that any protected characteristic is being challenged.

Next term, all pupils and staff will be invited to make a New Year’s resolution focused on using less of something as part of the school’s focus on becoming more sustainable.  The pupils will also have the opportunity to work in year group teams toward earning MCS accreditation as an Eco-School. More on this in the new year.

U6 Debate: The Politics of Race and Identity

Last Friday the Upper Sixth welcomed founder of the Equiano Project, Inaya Folarin Iman, and Keisha Asare, of the University of Oxford’s African and Carribbean Society for a debate as part of MCS’s popular #YouCan’tSayThat series.

Supporting local primary schools
In November, we learned that the government scheme to support online learning was unable to provide the necessary devices to three of our partner primary schools in OX3 and OX4.

Since then, MCS donors have generously contributed funds for the purchase of over 50 laptops and data access. These machines will benefit families without home computer access whose children have so far struggled to participate in online learning.

We know from one of the school heads that these devices have been transformative for the children’s education during periods of isolation, and are also helping them catch up on critial learning missed during the first lockdown.

There is still space to support this initiative. If you would like to do so, please contact  Susie Baker or Scott Crawford.

Donor Report
The 2019-2020 Donor Report will shortly be arriving with donors, and is available to read online here.

Among the highlights of this year’s edition is a profile of OW Ken Barnes (1952) who helped with the match in our Conveniamus campaign.

We are delighted to share this report with our community so that you can see how your donations have made a difference at MCS.

Connect with MCS and OWs
It’s been good to speak to OWs and Friends this year by phone, especially during the first lockdown. If you know someone who will be alone at Christmas, we hope you too will have a moment to reconnect over the holiday.

We hope you enjoy our end-of-year video.

Don’t forget to follow us on social media!
It provides a great opportunity for OWs to connect and share, and we regularly post news and updates about the school. Click below to find us.
