MCS was informed that Robert died on 17 April 2012.
Robert was a pupil at MCS from 1943-53 and returned to teach after taking an English Literature degree at Trinity College Dublin. He was briefly a boarding house tutor under Bob Stanier before becoming Head of English when Stanley Fisher retired. His next post, in 1965, was at Westminster College in Oxford where he passed on his skills to trainee teachers, later moving on to become Head of Drama at Marlborough College.
He remained a bachelor and in retirement moved to Wheatley, looking after his elderly mother, and was in touch with MCS for many years. The following obituary was published on the Marlburian Club website. It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Robert Avery on Tuesday 17 April after a long illness which he bore with great fortitude. Educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford, Trinity College, Dublin and Oriel College, Oxford, Robert taught first at Magdalen College School from 1958-65 where he was Senior English Master.
Between 1965-68 he was a Lecturer at Westminster College, Oxford after which he joined Marlborough. Robert was a most talented Director of Drama from 1970-90, having acted as Head of English from 1968-69. He was also House Master of Elmhurst (then a Junior House) from 1981-88.
A memorial service was held on 5 September 2012 at SS Peter and Paul Church, Worminghall, Buckinghamshire.
