(10 May 1938 – 26 May 2023)
The Waynflete Office has been informed by his wife Yvonne of the death of OW Malcolm Horsman. Yvonne sent these words about Malcolm’s life:
My husband Malcolm Horsman (boarder 1950 – 1956) died on 26th May 2023. We had been together for 47 years.
Malcolm often spoke with great fondness of his time at MCS.
He was the first to admit he was not Oxford material but did excel at sport playing 1st X1 hockey, stroke of the 1st 1V and Captain of Athletics.
He was awarded the Coronation Cup for 1956, breaking the school high jump record which had stood for almost 80 years.
Unfortunately, his time at MCS was cut short when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and spent 7 months in the Slade Hospital at Headington. But as Malcolm admits it was no great hardship being surrounded by young pretty nurses in starched uniforms.
Malcolm had intended to go to Cranwell and a career in the RAF but his medical history prevented him from flying fast jets. He therefore decided on a career as a solicitor qualifying in 1962 and being awarded the Northern William Hutton prize in his finals.
He was offered an immediate partnership with his then firm and became a senior partner in the mid 70s .
One day he received a phone call from Sam Salway (OW 1956, deceased) who enquired whether Malcolm was still playing hockey. Malcolm at that time was captain of Norton Hockey Club which Sam then joined. Sam then joined Malcolm in his solicitors practice in Middlesbrough where they both remained for the next 40 or so years.
Malcolm has three sons, Simon , Jonathan and Thomas.
He was something of a car buff and at the age of 85 was still driving his Porsche or Aston Martin DB9! As Malcolm said, not bad for an also-ran in the general sixth.
