(4 May 1934 – 20 January 2022)
We have been informed by Grahame’s wife Joyce of his death on 20 January at the age of 87. Grahame and Joyce have been great supporters of MCS and we were delighted to welcome them from their home in Canada for a visit in 2017, a photo of which is shown above. Appreciative of his wonderful education received at MCS only as a result of a scholarship, Grahame and Joyce have over recent years contributed to the Bursary fund to enable other pupils to have a similar opportunity.
The following obituary is adapted from one published in Grahame’s local paper The Globe and Mail.
Grahame Henry was born in London on May 4, 1934 and died in Toronto, Canada on January 20, 2022 with his loving wife and best friend, Joyce, by his side. He is also mourned by his brother Stuart and family in the UK, by his sister-in-law Barbara (Bisgrove), and her family and sister-in-law Judith (King). Grahame was a scholarship pupil at MCS and went on to read Mathematics at Oxford University. Grahame came to Canada in 1961 where he subsequently met Joyce; they married here in 1966. Grahame had a good, adventurous, contributing, thoughtful life. A quiet man, he smiled a lot and could be very funny. Initially employed at English Electric in Kidsgrove, England, working with some of the very first computers, Grahame spent his career in the field of data processing. His assignments included responsibility for the Toronto Stock Exchange’s first online stock quotation system and Manager of data processing services for the Government of Fiji. After a number of years as a data processing consultant, including some volunteer overseas assignments for this NGO, he completed his career as Director, Information Systems at CESO.
A keen sportsman, Grahame played field hockey for the City of Oxford. Tennis and badminton were important activities throughout his life and, at the age of 80, he enthusiastically took up lawn bowling. Worldwide travellers, loving exposure to different cultures, Grahame and Joyce travelled over the years to more than 100 countries. Frequent trips were made back to England to see family and friends as well as for theatre and museum visits. Grahame spent his last four years enjoying life at The Dunfield Retirement Residence. A lifelong active member of The Anglican Church, a service to celebrate Grahame’s life will take place. The family is extremely grateful for the compassionate support Grahame received from Dr. Richard Brodie and the wonderful Palliative Care team at Providence Healthcare as well as from other staff there and at St. Michael’s Hospital.
