(14 September 1939 – 10 May 2023)
We are grateful to Alan’s son John for these words about his father:
Born 14 Sep 1939 Headington. Died 10 May 2023 Mexborough, South Yorkshire.
From Magdalen College School, Alan won the exhibition scholarship to read History at Pembroke College, Oxford.
He married Hilary, also of Headington, and moved to Leamington Spa where he taught for a brief period before pursuing a career in the police. He trained at Bramshill Police College where he was awarded the Baton of honour/silver award for student of the year.
The family moved to Birmingham where he worked for nine years and then on to Doncaster. Alan was promoted to Superintendent at South Yorkshire Police – our understanding is that he was the youngest officer to achieve the rank of Superintendent at that time.
In his retirement, Alan’s passion was collecting books, stamps, antiques, and memorabilia, and he had a market stall at Doncaster in his spare time. He loved playing bridge and was an active member of the bridge community in South Yorkshire, attending competitions in the UK and abroad. He also enjoyed the theatre, film, and music.
Alan was diagnosed with cancer in December 2022 and sadly passed away in May 2023. Alan’s brother, Harry (OW 1953), passed away later in the same year.
Alan’s ashes were scattered at Shotover in Headington.
Alan leaves his sister Enid, his three children Ruth, Elizabeth and John, and seven grandchildren, and is sadly missed.
