MCS’s first Giving Day took place on 30-31 March and has exceeded expectations by raising £194,409 towards bursaries.

OWs, parents, governors, Friends, and staff came together to raise this amazing total in a 36-hour fundraising marathon that celebrated everything that makes MCS so special.

The excitement across school was palpable last week through a mix of sporting challenges, photo opportunities and, of course, the free cupcakes! Thanks go to all the OWs, parents, staff and former pupils who shared their perspectives through the Giving Day emails and videos. Thanks also to everyone at school who made it possible – as ever, the academic and support staff were outstanding in their enthusiasm and energy.

The Giving Day Hub was buzzing as people took a ‘Bish Pic’ in the wonderful William Waynflete cutout frame made by Mr Hunter, there were free cupcakes courtesy of  Lizzie and the catering team, and the Archive Team offered the retro board game ‘Please Sir’ and the chance to try dip pen calligraphy.

The competition was fierce but friendly as the PA Pub Quiz returned after a hiatus of two years. Mr McDonald and Mr Vallance did an outstanding job of compiling and presenting the quiz. 15 teams enjoyed a meal, drinks and quizzing and generously boosted the Giving Day fund with donations on the night and congratulations go to ‘Ship of Hoys’ who were victorious.

Pupils threw themselves into the challenges such as the MCS Great Pottery Throw Down, Bowls at Coles; pitting their cricketing skills against our U19 England cricketer and penalty shootout time where they attempted to save a penalty against our U17 footballing star Harry. And Big School rocked and rolled to the outstanding talents of pupils participating in House Singing. Meanwhile, it was stiff competition for the top spots in the MCS Staff Bake Off. We were delighted to welcome guest judges Loredana Stroup, MCS parent and owner of G&Ds and Dan Rosier (OW 2000) owner of Peloton Expresso.

Our star bakes were:

Bryony King’s Ginger Cake with White Chocolate Icing for William Wayn-Sweets (best sweet treats)
Susie Baker’s Waynflete World won Flavoury Savoury (best savoury)
Leonie Moylan’s Bee Cake won Best Lookin Cookin (best presentation)
Jo Linzey’s vegan lemon cupcakes for Bake Off the Beaten Track (best alternative ingredients)

The biggest thank you must of course go to the 449 donors who contributed £194,409 towards bursaries.
Their generosity makes an MCS education possible for more young people, regardless of their family circumstances, and that changes lives.

And finally, we cannot do a round-up of the first MCS Giving day without acknowledging the outstanding MCS homage to ‘Flashdance’, what good sports our staff are! If you haven’t seen it, it’s a treat. Donations towards bursaries can still be made via our Make a Gift page.
