Sports Report Week 2

Athletics

The athletics squads have had a busy start to the term with 3 big meets over the past week. The U12 and U13 Boys squads were first out on the track at The Abingdon meet, at Tilsley Park. Both age groups competed well, finishing second in the team competition. In the U12 category, Individual performances of the day were Matt Critchley’s 25m throw in the Javelin and Dom Livecche’s second place finish in the shot putt.

In the U13 age group Nolu Omotayo finished 2nd in the Javelin and in the 200m, and Freddie Jones, Jason Ou and Xavier Combart finished joint first in the high jump.

On Thursday all age groups competed at the Achilles relays event at Iffley Road. Strong competition from the likes of Millfield, Harrow, Eton and St Pauls – including more local schools such as Abingdon and Radley meant this was always going to be a tough day! The Inter and Senior boys did well to qualify for the 4x400m final, with both teams finishing just off the leading group in 6th place. The Senior girls finished 3rd in the 3x800m and 2^nd in the 4x400m – losing out to a particularly strong International standard Millfield team.

And on Saturday the full squad was in action at Marlborough College. In the team event, the Senior boys finished best coming 2nd out of a field of 8 teams, whilst the Inter boys and Senior Girls both finished 4th and the Junior boys finished 5th.

In the 1500m, Hannah Betts ran well to finish 2nd, whilst Jessie Bennell finished 4th in the senior Girls 200m. Dan Kelly won the Javelin and came 2nd in the 200m,  and Hal Burtenshaw and Lucian Foltier both finished 3rd in the 400m and 1500m respectively.

Oyare Anejo won both the triple jump and 400m, also coming second in the long jump, whilst George Maddison and Roshan Mowat came 2nd in the Javelin and the high jump. Freddie Jones ran well in the 1500m in the junior boys, as did Raoul Patel in the 800m – both finishing in 4th position.

Good luck to those running tonight at the Radley relays and to the Junior and Inter boys at the Oxford City Schools event tomorrow.

Hockey

The 1st XI finished 4th in the Tier 3 competition at Lee Valley last week.

In the semi-finals, with MCS having been 2-0 ahead, Eastbourne finally came out on top 3-2.

In the 3rd v 4th play-off, the scoreline was unfortunately the same. A 3-2 loss to Forest School was a disappointing way to finish the season.

However, the team have done brilliantly this season and it is only the second time that the school has reached this stage of the competition.

Cricket

v Bedford Modern School: The U13As won by 115 runs and now progress to round two of the knockout competition.

v Reading Blue Coat: 1st XI won by 5 wickets; 2nd XI lost by 5 wickets.

v Cokethorpe: 3rd XI won by 2 wickets.

v Bromsgrove: 1st XI won by 3 runs; 2nd XI won by 43 runs; 3rd XI won by 9 wickets; U15A won by 4 runs; U15B lost by 73 runs; U15C lost by 1 wicket; U14A lost by 7 wickets; U14B lost by 5 wickets.

National T20 – Rounds 1 and 2 at Radley College.

In round 1, the 1st XI beat RGS HW by 101 runs, with Jonathon Jelfs scoring 110.  This set up a second round match v Radley.  Despite not being at our best with the bat, MCS posted 114.  Radley looked to be cruising to victory, but 3 quick wickets from Aryan Joshi turned the game. A composed final over from James Coles and a great catch from Tom Chesser on the last ball of the game saw MCS win by 1 run.

Tennis

v King Alfred’s Academy: U15B won 12-0.

v Tudor Hall: Girls 1st Team lost 8-4 in the Aberdare Cup.

v Bloxham: Girls 3rd Team lost 7-2; Girls 4th Team lost 6-3.

v Moulsford: U12A won 9-0; U12B won 9-0.

v Warwick: 2nd VI lost 6-3; 3rd VI lost 6-3; 4th VI won 5-4; U15A lost 6-3; U15B lost 9-0; U14A won 7-2; U14B won 9-1; U14C won 9-0; U13A lost 7-2; U13B lost 7-2; U13C lost 6-3; U12A won 8-1; U12B won 8-1; U12C won 6-3.

v Bradfield: U16A lost 8-1; U16B lost 6-3.

Team of the week

Despite the 3rd XI & U12 tennis players winning twice this week, as well as the U13As’ convincing win, Team of the Week has to be the 1st XI for two incredible wins in the final overs of matches against Bromsgrove and Radley.
