The MCS U13 chess team performed brilliantly at the ECF National Junior Team Challenge Finals, held at Hertford College on April 23rd.

Battling against eleven other teams, each of whom qualified through a series of zonal championships across the country, the MCS team of Edison Xu, Hou Ning Zhu, Samir Khan and Ewan Bridson finished in Silver Medal position, only ½ point behind winners King’s College School, Wimbledon. The MCS team won four of its five matches, drawing the fifth 2-2 against the eventual team champions. Also in the MCS squad were Pip Lucas and Junior School Captain of Chess Jamie Turner, both of whom were winners in the Reserves Tournament.

The team also won the Chess Problem Solving competition with a perfect score of 30/30 (sharing 1st position with Royal Grammar School, Newcastle). This win carried with it automatic qualification for the team captain to the national finals of the Problem Solving Championships next February.
