On 26 March, the UK winners of the Special Mention in the Juvenes Translatores Competition were invited to take part in a translation workshop in London, hosted by the European Commission, represented by the Staff translators Paul Kaye and Ciara Colgan.

There, they learned about the work of translators in European Union institutions, and were shown how a large intergovernmental organisation manages multilingualism. The pupils also had to do a translation based on authentic legal texts, using the translation tools used by EU translators. Finally, they were given a talk on creative translation by Charlotte Ryland, Lecturer in German at Oxford University and Director of the Stephen Spender Trust.

The building also hosted an exhibition on translations of ‘Alice in Wonderland’, containing three different versions of Scots, which are just three of over 200 languages spoken across the EU.
