On Thursday afternoon, the Theology Society were extremely privileged to welcome Professor Richard Swinburne, Emeritus Nolloth Professor of the Philosophy of the Christian Religion at the University of Oxford. Professor Swinburne is one of the most important and influential philosophers of religion of the 20th and 21st centuries, and has published a number of significant books on the existence of God and the rationality of religious belief over the past fifty years. His talk, ‘Why does God allow Suffering?’, was greeted with enthusiastic and characteristically rigorous questions from a wide number of pupils of all ages, including several Sixth-Form Theologians and Philosophers who have been reading Professor Swinburne’s work as part of their A-level courses. Ably chaired by the Theology Society President, Yiannis, this was an intellectually stimulating and hugely rewarding afternoon for all involved.
