On Tuesday 5 July, a team of Upper Fourth pupils from Magdalen College School won the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Year 10 Chemistry Challenge at the University of Greenwich, Medway.

Having finished the qualifying round as regional champions, George C, Clement J, Sasha L and Zachary S travelled to Kent to compete against a particularly strong field in the South East final.

The first task required the teams to use a range of chemical analysis techniques to identify three unknown substances and solve a murder mystery case. The boys enjoyed using the state-of-the-art equipment including IR spectrometers and melting point machines before completing a written task with multiple choice questions.

The final session involved clock reactions and rates, with the teams working through a series of experiments to align the colour change end point of the clock reactions with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. The boys were rightly very pleased with their effort, finishing the task just a fraction of a second off the beat!

Following the judges’ adjudication, MCS were awarded a well-deserved first place. The team were particularly grateful for the hard work of the event organisers and the stiff competition provided by the other schools, all of which made for a tremendously fun and interesting day.

Well done boys!
