On Monday, MCS and the Oxford Schools Sustainability Network (OxSSN) welcomed over 100 pupils from 17 different secondary schools across Oxfordshire and beyond to the Oxfordshire Conference of the Parties (OxCOP) at Oxford Town Hall. In attendance were Cheney School, D’Overbroeck’s, The Swan, Cherwell School, Oxford Spires, The Oxford Academy, Kingsdown School, Oxford High School, MCS Brackley, St Helen’s and St Katherine’s, Abingdon School, Radley School, Larkmead School, John Mason School, Fitzharrys School, and Wheatley Park School.
Proceedings started with guest speaker Matthew Shribman, climate scientist and activist, talking about how to understand and communicate changes to our climate, before OxCOP President Oscar (Upper Sixth) delivered a brilliant introduction to OxCOP29, mirroring the COP29 event currently taking place in Baku in Azerbaijan.
Delegates from 16 ‘countries’ packed the Council Chamber at Oxford Town Hall and joined in an ‘unmoderated caucus’ (to use UN terminology), with pupils from MCS chairing the four committees of energy, cities, oceans, and forests and food. Lively debates were had about what to invest in, what verb to use in a resolution, and whether it was indeed the responsibility of developed nations to cover the ‘loss and damage’ suffered predominantly by the Global South. Negotiations were navigated with the help of students from the Oxford University Climate Society, recently returned from COP29 themselves, who also gave a talk on climate-related careers and how to get heard at COP events.
At the end of the day, pupils discussed their ideas with the other countries’ delegates, and after some robust argument and counter-argument, resolutions were passed – watch and learn, COP29! Finally, Sasha (Upper Sixth) chaired a live stream interview with Sam Bright, deputy editor of DeSmog, directly from COP29 at Baku Stadium, taking questions from the floor at OxCOP.
It was an engaging and purposeful day, with many pupils asking if they could return next year. Special thanks to the MCS pupils who hosted an excellent event.
