On Friday 24 June – Founders Day – MCS pupils and staff are walking 14.80 km to raise money in support of Mustardseed School, our partner school in Uganda.
The challenging four-to-five-hour route will take our walkers through Port Meadow, Wolvercote, University Parks and Magdalen College grounds before returning to School Field at approximately 3.15 pm.
At 22 months, Covid-19-related school closures in Uganda were among some of the longest in the world. And while almost all young children are now behind in their learning, Mustardseed School is attempting to make up for lost time.
“Having finally opened on 10 January 2022, we are now in full gear with 80 little learners, aged from 2 to 10, across six year groups, and it looks likely we’ll be welcoming twice that number next year”, writes Jessica Napier, Educational Advisor at the school.

“Some highlights so far include the children learning to live in harmony with the astonishing richness of animal and plant life in their environment, local traditional dance and drumming lessons, and the children’s reading ability improving by leaps and bounds”.
“We have also started a health-monitoring programme for all the children, with full annual medical examinations to assess their nutritional status and to look for signs of underlying illness, disease or growth deficiency”.

Mustardseed’s mission is to provide an inspirational and practical education for young people in Sentema, Uganda. On Founders Day 2022, donations will be directed primarily towards bursaries for local children who would otherwise be unable to benefit from attending the school.
Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of OW Sir Vernon Ellis (1966), if each MCS pupil were to raise just £35, we could send more than 100 children to Mustardseed for an entire year.

Thank you for your support.
