Ever wondered how life-changing medicines are created, and who’s behind the breakthroughs?

Senior Biomedical Scientist for Novo Nordisk Dr Shahul Hameed spoke with pupils this afternoon in the latest of our series of Careers workshops, this week focusing on careers in scientific research. We maintain close links with our parent and OW network, and we regularly host several lunchtime careers workshops each term to allow pupils to gain valuable insights into various career paths.

Dr Hameed is involved in developing pharmaceuticals to treat type 2 diabetes, and talked about his career within the pharmaceutical industry and the work he does developing the life saving treatments of tomorrow.

The talk also expanded upon the challenge that type 2 diabetes causes worldwide, the various modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors that cause the disease, the methods used to research treatments, and the process of manufacturing drugs for distribution. Pupils then had the opportunity to ask Shahul about the industry and question themselves whether they could play a role in discovering the next life-saving drug of the future!
