OWs through the decades

Left to right: OWs Brian Harding (1951), Bill Morris (1963 and Chair of OWs ), Christopher Young (1965), Simon Roper (1974), the Master Helen Pike, Luke Walton (1983), Jim Hawker (1992 and MCS Governor), Cameron Young (2001), Lizzie Battrum (2012) and Michael Reichenberg Ashby (2020).

We were delighted to welcome nearly 100 guests to the OW Lunch on Saturday 12 November.

Previously an annual event for Veteran Old Waynfletes, this year The Waynflete Office consulted with the MCS community and it was agreed the lunch should become an occasion to which all OWs were invited.

A stunning archive display in the Dining Hall greeted guests, the centerpiece of which was the newly restored Brownrigg stained glass panel that formerly hung in the old school chapel.

OWs from every decade from the 1940s to 2020 were represented, a span of 78 years in total. Several year groups had arranged their own mini-reunions at the lunch, and we welcomed former and current staff.  There was much lively chat and catching up on the lives of our OWs.

After a splendid three-course lunch from our colleagues in Catering, guests moved to The Studio where Mrs Lindsay McCormack (Archivist) and Dr Katherine Crossley (School Historian) displayed more treasure from the archives including photo albums from across the decades. OWs had fun spotting themselves in everything from sports team photos to amateur snaps.

The MCS Story Booth was open for business and OWs recorded recollections of memorable school trips which will appear in an article in the new edition of our alumni magazine The Bridge which will be published in early 2023.

The new format lunch was judged to be a great success and we look forward to welcoming OWs to the many events we have lined up over the coming months. Details can be found here.
