MCS is proud of art teacher Chris Otley, whose etching has been selected for this year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
The exhibition is the world’s largest open submission contemporary art show, which has taken place every year without interruption since 1769. A panel of Royal Academicians make their selection of around 800 works from over 16,000 
entries from the public, and combine these with works of their peers, such as Anselm Kiefer, Wim Wenders, Norman Ackroyd, Paula Rego and Sean Scully.
This year’s exhibition was co-ordinated by the painter Jock McFadyen, and the proceeds from the exhibition go directly towards funding the postgraduate tuition at the RA.
Chris’ etching (right), was based on the Port at Aarhus; Denmark; and has been hung in the gallery curated by Anne Desmet RA; the first female print-maker to be admitted to the Academy. Chris had the chance to preview his work over half term; at the ‘Varnishing Day’.
Although the tradition of artists making final adjustments to their works is now long gone, other traditions remain – such as a procession of artists to St James’ Piccadilly for the Service for Artists – even if in recent years, this procession has been led by a steel band.
The exhibition runs at Burlington House from 10th June to 12th August.
