Retired MCS teacher John Place is celebrating the publication of his first book, entitled A Tommy’s Life in the Trenches.
John, along with William Mackain-Bremner, have collected together for the first time all the extant postcards drawn by Fergus Mackain. Mackain was an advertising illustrator and artist who served on the front, before being wounded and turning to designing humorous postcards for soldiers to send home. The book shows these postcards, together with commentary about the Western Front scenes depicted. Also included are reproductions of actual messages sent during the war on the back of Mackain’s postcards.
