There was great excitement in the Junior School yesterday as boys arrived to celebrate World Book Day. Teachers and staff dressed up as a whole array of book characters from Paddington Bear and Stig of the Dump to The Wild Robot and Mortal Engines, and so many boys (and parents) had clearly worked very hard creating their costumes with lots of cardboard, tinfoil and face paint. There was so much creativity and imagination on show, which brought much merriment to School House and seemed a fitting way to express MCS’ love for books and stories.

The morning began with an extended assembly introducing our theme for the day: ‘Once Upon a Picture’. The Big Bad Wolf (AKA Mrs Brooks) highlighted ways in which words and pictures are great teammates in books, complimenting one another in the art of storytelling and book creation. We looked at this in a range of books from picture books, illustrated chapter books and graphic novels to non-fiction, as well as front covers and endpapers. The boys then had fun guessing which picture book was loved by which member of staff, using their childhood photos as a clue. This brought much jollity to the assembly.

The boys then scurried off to their classrooms to draw their own front covers and write blurbs of their favourite books. Some beautiful artwork has been produced and we look forward to displaying them in the Junior School for everyone to enjoy. They will be a real inspiration for those looking for their next book recommendation.

After break the boys enjoyed the Reading Carousel – storytime in small groups that the boys had signed up for earlier in the week. During this time, members of staff read a picture book or a book extract to tie in with our theme of “Once Upon a Picture”, taking time to enjoy the artwork. These included The Day the Crayons Quit, Goodnight Moon, Just So Stories and Mr Potter’s Pigeons. It was a delight to pop into the classrooms to find the boys sitting mesmerised by their chosen book.

A big thank you to all who made World Book Day 2025 happen – the boys, the parents, and of course all the Junior School staff who embrace the creative literary madness for the morning. It’s teamwork that makes it happen, just like those teammates words and pictures.
