Pupils at Magdalen College School are celebrating their GCSE results. The cohort’s success is all the more remarkable considering the disruption to their education over the last three years.

Master Helen Pike said “Our pupils should be proud of their excellent GCSE results, which are testament to their hard work as well as to the support of their teachers and parents. The resilience and determination our pupils have shown in the face of often challenging circumstances has been heartening and salutary. We now look forward to all that our new Lower Sixth will continue to contribute to the life of the school, alongside a strong cohort of new members joining us in September.”

Key highlights include:

  • 29 pupils achieved 10 or more 8 or 9 grades
  • 56 pupils were awarded 9 or more 8 or 9 grades
  • 77 pupils achieved 8 or more 8 or 9 grades

Four pupils were awarded a straight set of grade 9s, including Sam W, who played the lead character, Pip, in the new musical Birdland, a special collaboration between MCS, renowned choral composer Bob Chilcott and award-winning poet Charles Bennett which brought together nearly four hundred local primary schools pupils for a wonderful celebration of music, theatre-making and community.

Isaac E and Sam T, two members of the MCS team that won The Perse Coding Team Challenge in April with an astonishing 120/120 – the first time a full score has been achieved in the competition’s history – collected 17 grade 9s between them.

The grades achieved by Tom D-L were all the more remarkable given that he underwent chemotherapy during his GCSE year.

Harry W achieved a wonderful set of results despite balancing his studies with significant training and playing commitments at West Bromwich Albion Academy. Similarly, Jason O, the number one ranked badminton player in his age group in England, collected an impressive number of 8 and 9 grades.
