On Tuesday, 29 March, over 60 exhibitors and 500 pupils and parents attended Magdalen College School’s first on-site Careers Fair since the pandemic began. More than 40 pupils from a variety of MCS partnership schools were also in attendance. The event featured professionals from a broad range of sectors; from art to accountancy, media to medicine and teaching to technology.
Taking place across two exhibition halls in Big School and the Sports Hall, attendees had the chance to further talk about careers they were familiar with, as well as discover new areas of interest.
Mrs Engin, Assistant to the Deputy Head (Education Development), was responsible for organising the event and said this of its success: “It was lovely to welcome so many interested and engaged young people exploring the future world of work and I am happy to say that, in addition to MCS pupils and parents, we were delighted to host over 40 attendees from our partner schools in the state-maintained sector”.

Of the more than 50 companies represented at the event, many were impressed by the pupils and the level of engagement they received. Paul Watt, Lead Recruiter at The British Army was one such exhibitor, saying: “What a great evening, we had a large number of the students come and talk with us and ask some really well structured questions! Thank you again for inviting us, to a well-planned and organised careers event”.
Dr Colin Roach, Head of Integrated Scenarios and Transport at UKAEA agreed, saying: “I thoroughly enjoyed the evening which was clearly a big success. I was kept busy with many interested students asking excellent questions throughout”.
Luke Walton (OW), Producer at The Pitch Film Fund described his return to MCS fondly: “I greatly appreciated attending the careers fair and being back at school. I particularly enjoyed engaging with four or five of those pupils from partner schools.
My most “that’s MCS moment” was when I asked a group what they each were interested in exploring in film. A year 10 pupil said “screenwriting” with great confidence and so I asked “what have you written?’ Whereupon he reached into his bag and produced a 120 page script, complete in professional format – an adaptation of Macbeth into a modern context!”
