Congratulations to Thomas (Lower Sixth) on his performance in the cross-school combined team ‘Byte Our Dust!’ in this year’s National Cipher Challenge at the University of Southampton. Led by Christopher (Winchester College) they fought off competition from 2760 teams to be awarded IBM team prize, one of only four prizes awarded each year in the challenge. The team members were:
Christopher B, Winchester College
Thomas, Magdalen College School, Oxford
Oscar, Winchester College
Christopher L, Winchester College
Lyndon, Eton College
Thomas, Lyndon and Christopher first met at prep school, where they attempted the competition for the first time, leading to this unusual and very high-powered cross-school team.
It attracted entries from over 6700 competitors, so this was quite an achievement.
National Cipher Challenge
The National Cipher Challenge published the leaderboard last week with the names of the winners. Speaking on the scale of their success, the challenge organisers had this to say: “This is a prestigious competition supported by GCHQ and a number of commercial partners including IBM. It is run by the University of Southampton School of Mathematical Sciences in partnership with Trinity College Cambridge, and attracted entries from over 6700 competitors, so it was quite an achievement”.
