It is with great sadness that Magdalen College School has learnt of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96.

As the longest-reigning British monarch, the Queen has been an enduring presence in the lives of pupils, staff and Old Waynfletes for 70 years.

Many of our school community were lucky enough to meet the Queen during her long reign, including Old Waynfletes Professor Sir John Cunningham (OW 1966), former Queen’s physician, and Captain Jonathan Olley (OW 2007), former Queen’s equerry.

"Today marks the end of an extraordinary reign, the like of which none of us shall witness again. As we reflect on the end of a full life of service and devotion, we also mark the end of an era.”

HELEN PIKE, MASTER

The Master, Helen Pike, said: “Today marks the end of an extraordinary reign, the like of which none of us shall witness again. As we reflect on the end of a full life of service and devotion, we also mark the end of an era.”

MCS celebrated the Coronation of the Queen in 1953 by creating the Coronation Cup, awarded annually to a pupil or group for the most outstanding performance of the year in any activity.

The school intends to mark the Queen’s passing in the first instance with a memorial chapel service.

We offer our condolences to the Royal family, and give thanks for the extraordinary life and work of Queen Elizabeth II.

Update: Magdalen College School will be closed on Monday 19 September for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. With the exception of Monday 19, school events will continue as normal and activities due to take place on that date will be rescheduled.
