Friday 11 December 2020 saw the Upper Sixth enjoy the latest in our popular series of #YouCantSayThat! debates, this time on the politics of race and identity in 21st-century British society.
As part of this series, MCS invites speakers who come from fundamentally different positions on an important social issue to speak, disagree, and argue their case. Our guests for this topic were:Â
- Inaya Folarin Iman is a writer, social and political commentator, and campaigner. She is the founder and director of The Equiano Project, a discussion and ideas forum which promotes free discussion on issues of race, culture, and politics. She was previously Director, and now sits on the Board of the Free Speech Union, and she is a columnist for Spiked! Magazine. Inaya has written for The Telegraph, Daily Mail, The Spectator, Standpoint Magazine, and several other publications. She regularly appears on TV and radio to provide commentary on ‘subjects such as freedom of speech, democracy, liberty, Brexit, and identity politics.
- Kiesha Asare is the Senior Welfare Officer at the Oxford African and Caribbean Society, and has been involved in a number of movements in and outside of Oxford University, such as Common Ground, and the Oxford Rhodes Must Fall Movement. Kiesha was recently profiled by the Guardian in Young, British and Black: the voices behind the UK’s anti-racism protests, and she was invited to speak on why the Black Lives Matters movement is important for all people regardless of race to the UK Government’s Commission for Race and Ethnic Disparities.
Both speakers raised some fascinating points, on everything from the origins of racism to questions of what racism means in contemporary British society and what steps should we take to challenge the continued problem of racial inequality and injustice. While disagreeing on several aspects of race and racism in British society, there were many points our speakers agreed on, and pupils had the opportunity to ask questions after a thought-provoking debate.
Many thanks to Kiesha and Inaya for joining us!
