OWs from the late 1970s may recall a particularly dubious school band, named Volta Redonda after Mr Bates’s favourite Brazilian steelworks. It comprised those wild men of rock n’ roll, Tim Isitt on drums, Rob Watson on bass and Mark Segal and Bill Locke on guitars.
Band members claim to have regularly ruined school dances and other social events around Oxford with their “special brand of nice boys playing pseudo punk and reggae, including plenty of gloomy self-penned songs about unrequited love”.
In the last couple of years, thanks to the enthusiasm of Rob’s wife Flor, the band has reunited to play again – trying to rekindle some of their teenage rage, whilst having opted for perfectly sensible careers: Tim is a consultant anaesthetist, Rob is the BBC World Service’s man at Westminster, Mark works in conflict resolution at the Department for International Development and Bill produces TV shows on History.
Apparently the band now specialises in ruining their wives’ birthday parties (!)
